Marijuana Comparison: Medical vs Recreational Potency

There’s somewhat of a debate going on in the legal marijuana world. More specifically, it’s medical vs recreational potency. Which is stronger, and why?

There are several things that determine a marijuana strain’s potency. There are also several things that separate the two. If you’re wondering what all those things are, then keep reading.

Medical vs Recreational Potency 101

What is the difference between medical marijuana and recreational marijuana?

For starters, one is approved for medical use while the other is approved for, well, your enjoyment. You’ve probably heard people say things like this is some medical-grade stuff, implying that what they’ve got is super potent. What we’ve done is familiarized ourselves with a certain stereotype, shining the spotlight on medical marijuana as the “stuff that’ll get you really high”.

So does that mean that recreational marijuana isn’t on par with the potency of medical marijuana?—Not at all. There are a few discerning factors that separate the two, and technically, potency isn’t one of them.

Here’s what it comes down to:

Their Usage

The biggest difference between medical marijuana and recreational marijuana is its usage. It’s plain and simple—Those who use medical marijuana are trying to naturally treat and seek relief from certain conditions. Those who use recreational marijuana are doing so for pure enjoyment.

That doesn’t mean that the two purposes don’t overlap. It does, however, play a role in the level of potency of the marijuana being purchased in general.

For example, someone undergoing chemotherapy may use medical marijuana to relieve their pain and stimulate their appetite. The level of potency will depend on two things: the severity of their condition and their comfort level in terms of getting high.

Their Costs

The prices you pay at a medical dispensary will differ greatly from a recreational dispensary. This is mainly because medical marijuana is considered medicine in terms of taxation. In other words, customers don’t have to pay taxes on their medical marijuana purchases.

They do, however, have to pay taxes on their recreational marijuana purchases. Of course, the level of potency per product does come into play with the pricing, but so do some other factors involving supplementary cannabinoids.

Supplementary Cannabinoids

One thing to take into consideration is that medical marijuana also has high concentrations of CBD. CBD is the non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant and is also used to treat a wide variety of conditions. In most cases, CBD content is crucial in treating ailments because this particular cannabinoid interacts with all of the body’s cells.

THC mainly interacts with the cells in your brain. Depending on an individual’s condition, they will be recommended products with certain levels of each cannabinoid. For those who need medical THC but can’t handle the high, the CBD concentration will be higher as it’s able to mitigate the intoxicating effects of THC.

So, Which is Better?

Now that Marijuana is legal medically and recreationally across different states, it all comes down to what you like. In terms of medical vs recreational potency, you can have a choice in how strong or weak you’d like your marijuana.
