90% of Americans favor marijuana legalization, but it’s still not legal on a federal level. If you want to reap the benefits of cannabis, then you might not feel comfortable indulging in something that you can still get into trouble for.
An alternative many people are turning to is cannabinoids other than THC, the active ingredient in cannabis that gets you high. For example, there are CBG and CBD.
If you want to learn the differences between CBG and CBD, then you’re in the right place. We’ll show you what each is and which might be better for you.
What is CBG?
Cannabigerol (CBG) is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Scientists first isolated it in the mid-1960s.
First, you get CBGa (solely from young plants), which turns into cannabidiolic acid (CBDa) and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) over time. These 2 then turn into CBD and THC respectively. If there are any of these left, then you’ll get CBG.

What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is also another cannabinoid and it was first isolated in the 1930s. What’s interesting is for about 40 years, it was left untouched until scientists were interested in it for its anticonvulsant properties.
It’s gotten some hype recently because it offers a lot of the same benefits as THC but is completely legal. This is because it comes from hemp plants, which have under 0.3% THC; this makes it federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill.
CBG vs CBD
Both have their own potential advantages that can improve your quality of life.
CBD is used as an epileptic drug; there’s an FDA-approved drug called Epidiolex available. It might also aid in decreasing symptoms of anxiety, depression, nausea, and pain.
CBG isn’t as well-researched, so there’s a lot we don’t know about it. However, it’s shown promise for pain, inflammation, depression, and cancer treatments. It also has antibacterial properties.
What’s great about CBG and CBD is both are non-psychoactive. This means you can ingest these cannabinoids, enjoy the effects, and not feel “high”. As a result, you’ll be able to incorporate either into your daily routine without worrying that you’ll be impaired.
Buying CBD will probably be easier than buying CBG since most products today are geared towards the more researched cannabinoid. But it’s possible to find products with both if you look hard enough.
In general, we’d suggest starting out with CBD since there are more options. Once you’ve familiarized yourself with that cannabinoid, it’ll be easier to incorporate CBG.
Give Either a Try
For CBG vs CBD, both offer many potential health advantages. CBD is the more researched cannabinoid, but truthfully, you stand to benefit from both. There are many products on the market that contain CBG and CBD, so try these out and see if they help with any ailments you might have.
