The Science Behind CBD

Furthermore, CBD has no narcotic effect precisely because it works only with the endocannabinoid system. It’s that simple.

To look at the matter a bit more in-depth, CBD is known as a “pleiotropic drug.” This means that CBD produces many different effects. Exactly how many different effects is still being studied, but researchers working together from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and King’s College in London have discovered that CBD activates the 5-HT1A (hydroxytryptamine) serotonin receptor, which produces an anti-anxiety effect. The 5-HT1A receptor is related to sleep, pain, anxiety, appetite, and even addictive behaviors. The end result is that CBD affects neural receptors in your brain that trigger responses of relaxation.

In a Brazilian research paper, researchers concluded that CBD has anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties. The study employed “animal models of anxiety” and “healthy volunteers,” clearly suggesting “an anxiolytic-like effect of CBD.” More research regarding the exact impact of CBD is required, they say, but the science is clear: CBD enhances or inhibits “the binding action of certain G-protein coupled receptors,” such as the 5-HT1A (hydroxytryptamine) serotonin receptor mentioned above. Put simply: CBD appears useful as an anti-anxiety drug.
